An update on Merida using the palette of Rosalba Carriera’s portrait of Felicita Sartori which I shall post a link to when this is done :3

This is a really silly awesome fun exercise. Take a Disney Princess Coloring page and then colour it with the color palette of an old master :P
Most people do this digitally to colour select the palette but I want to get used to oils more and get better at mixing the right colours myself. So thought this would be a fun exercise.
I choose Merida, and in her princess get-up as it screams the ”old master” look, I was in fact going to do just the head to really get into the skin tones and the expression. But I need practice with clothing too so stuck with the whole line work.
The painting I’m using for the pallette is Rosalba Carriera’s portrait of Felicita Sartori from the 1730’s. I picked this because even though the over all colours are blue it still has that vibrant red which would be perfect for Merida’s stray curl.
Still in progress obviously, I’m just getting the first thin layers in.
Also attached is my finish skull study. Yay cardboard!
Current state of the office. Mini oil painting work in progress study of a skull… because I can… and I like skulls! Also a peak at a reference I was given for a commission by http://oroboros.de/ (No pressure!)
This is day 4 of the improvement hell challenge. I had to pick a part of the body I struggle to draw and then do studies of it, including at least 5 skeletal and muscle studies.
I suck at anatomy in general, but I remembered from class that for some reason the arm I just never understood. I got the bare basics of other parts of the body but the arm just got really complicated especially the closer to the hand it got. So I decided to go with that.
it just shows how little I really know about my anatomy and I need to fix this so I shall probably try and squeeze in some weekly studies. My information is from an artists anatomy book, and the other illustrations are studies from Bridgeman as I really liked the comparison of the muscles and then his shape break down - I understood it a lot better after doing all those studies. (I did two almost identical because one was so small and got really messy to read ) I also used imagineFX anatomy special to help with some break down shapes.

So for the last few days I was away in Quebec seeing family. I therefore got behind and am doing some catch up sessions on the 30 day improvement meme. You can find a full detail of the improvement challenge here: http://pencilcat.tumblr.com/post/27420093968/30-days-of-art-improvement-challenge and check out my tumblr for past and future posts :3
Days 2 and 3 were to draw a natural pose and a movement pose. I had a lot of fun with the male figure as I don’t tend to draw men a lot but as you can probably tell I got a little frustrated with the movement one, for some reason I struggled a lot with the angle of her face among other things.
The male nude figure is from http://artists.pixelovely.com/practice-tools/figure-drawing/ where as the dance figure has been in my reference folder for a while and on trying to find a source it seems to be from every dance academy ever featured on the internet >_<
Fin! Actually looking at it I might go back and do some texture touch ups… For now enjoy!
